I thought I started w free edition but was upgraded to deluxe. I have a w-2 but have to file Self Emp'mt taxes on housing and wages. Is that why I was upgraded?

I don't want to start all over but also like like to avoid the Deluxe fee if I'm able to file with the free version.  When I Review Form List, these are some that are listed:  Schedule B
Schedule R
Sch SE-S
Schedule SE Adjustments Worksheet
Form 2441
Schedule 8812
Form 8862

I can't actually view any of the forms to see if they are blank or filled in (maybe because I haven't purchased the product yet). Should I assume that having those on the list means they are necessary for my filing and, therefore, not just a simple return?

Correct.   Self-Employment tax will prevent you from using Free Edition.    Even if you start over, you will be upgraded to Deluxe for the SE tax - also for Schedule B - which is needed if you have over $1500 in interest and ordinary dividends.
