I had to pay an outstanding balance from a previous tax year. We paid it before getting our return but they deducted the balance from this return. How do I get refunded?

IRS computers should see yout overpayment and refund you.

That could take a long time.

If you contact IRS, that may or may not help the situation, but the agent can put a notation on your account.
