E-file Final 1040SR in TurboTax for Decedent

My mother passed away in 2022 and I am the executor appointed in a valid non-probated will.  I have split income and deductions for 2022 between pre-date of death and post-date of death, entered everything into TurboTax Deluxe, and owe money to the IRS (no refund in play).  As her personal representative (executor), I have filed a Form 56 with the IRS notifying them of my fiduciary relationship relative to signing and filing her final tax return.

My question regards e-filing the final tax return.  Since I have the authority to sign the return and have notified the IRS of that authority and there is no refund can I e-file the return using TurboTax by entering my driver's license information and PIN to sign the return? Both forms 2848 and 1310 are not applicable.

Q: can I e-file the return using TurboTax by entering my driver's license information and PIN to sign the return?

A: Yes.   As appointed representative, you must sign the return.   However, you are proving to Intuit that you are who you claim to be, so you should use your license information to self identify.   Nothing pertaining to your driving license data is transmitted to the IRS.

Only income earned between the beginning of the year and the date of death should be reported on the final return of the deceased person.

If income was received on their behalf after death, it would be reported on the return of the person actually receiving the income (beneficiary).

Sorry for your loss.

Just a small clarification.  In this situation where I am e-fling as the authorized representative for a decedent, what is transmitted to the IRS?  Is my name included as personal representative in the transmission?

  • Yes. You can file the final return using your drivers license (or indicate she doesn't have one) and personal identification number (PIN).  The PIN is anything you want it to be each year so it has no real association with last year's tax return for your mother.  If there does happen to be any issue with your drivers license then you can print and mail the tax return without reservation. See the link below for information about mailing the tax return for your mother.
  • How do I print and mail my tax return?
