As mentioned by a prior poster, TurboTax will prepare Form 8949 for you by using the Summary Method for reporting your crypto transactions.  You may also need to mail a copy of your CSV later, depending on what type of transactions you report.

Here's more info on Mailing Form 8949 for Summary Totals.

Hi MarilynG1, would what you described uploading Form 8949 work with the desktop version? Is this acceptable to the IRS? I already bought it because I read somewhere that the desktop version is the way to go and prepped my taxes with only my crypto outstanding...if not, is this in the works and will be completed by April 15? thanks

@MarilynG1 That is incorrect.  That is not all that is required.  A statement of all transactions must be attached. TurboTax only offers to have that sent in by mail.  Yes the return can still be ostensibly e-filed, but the statement must be mailed within 3 days of filing.

All other current tax software allows those statements to be attached for e-filing.  Why does TurboTax keep glossing over this like it’s not true?

Supposedly they are fixing this...last i heard someone else wrote they spoke to turbotax and the new date for a fix went from mid february to mid march...but that is just hear say...i haven't heard that from an official turbotax employee...is this the latest?

If you can save your CSV as a PDF or JPG, in TurboTax Online you can drag/drop it into your return.  You'll still enter summary totals.  If you decide to use TurboTax Online, you can Get a Refund from TurboTax for your desktop product.

So you’re saying TurboTax will definitely refund me due to this, including state purchases? What about making up for lost early pricing discounts?

Online is not the best for me because due to Virginia law I need to prepare a separate mock MFS return for Non-Resident Virginia. Online doesn’t support multiple returns.

This still doesn’t excuse the lack of functionality in desktop that is not made anywhere clear at time of purchase, and lags behind other products.

Why does everyone at TurboTax refuse to answer the question - why is this functionality so lacking in desktop? And why isn’t it made clear and why is nobody addressing that disparity?

”You’ll use what we feel like giving you” is not a great customer answer, especially when competing software seems to handle it. The approach you guys are taking is a bit lacking and comes off as dismissive.

Hi thanks for the refund offer...however can I did a lot of manual work to make my return clean on desktop and I do not want to do that again getting the online version. Can you answer so I can have clarity and move on....will the desktop have the csv import ability for my crypto defi transactions so it can upload my transactions one by one via an import function? Or should I not bank on it by April 15, pursue a desktop refund, purchase the online version and redo my whole return again?

Yeah this is absurdly bad. I originally purchased desktop Deluxe, realized it wouldn't let me import .csv files, found a TurboTax help page explaining how to format .csv for crypto, with a disclaimer saying that only Premier and Home and Business allows importing .csv files, upgraded my Deluxe to Premier, and I still can't import .csv files. I saw an earlier post about this functionality being available by March 18. If it's not, I'll be asking for refunds for both the original Deluxe download and Premier upgrade. Unsure if I will still give my business to Intuit after this. I've been using TT for about 20 years and I feel quite burned by this.
