Am I paying Double state taxes?

Hi, I'm married, filing jointly.  We live in CO.  Husband's income is from CO.  My income is from MO.  Why when I look at my CO state tax #'s, is almost half of my income being accounted for here, when I already pay MO state taxes?

Be sure you filed a Missouri non-resident return, and completed it before you started your Colorado return.  Your Colorado resident return will tax all your income from all sources (even out of state), but allow an adjustment for taxes paid to another state.  If the non-resident state isn't completed first, the credit can't be calculated properly.

To double-check, look at Line 11 of your Colorado DR104 form, that's where the credit should be listed.

If it's not there, I recommend deleting both state returns, and starting states over.  TurboTax will transfer all your information from the federal return, you will need to work through the Missouri return first, then Colorado.

Am I paying Double state taxes?

Hi Barb, so when I deleted both state, CO & MO were still listed, but said "start", so I entered MO 1st.  Then CO....Now I actually owe MORE to CO....lol!  any thoughts?

Am I paying Double state taxes?

both states are using both of our Federal Adjusted Income totals instead of breaking out.  Husband in CO & myself MO only...

Is there an amount on Line 11 of the Colorado return?  That's where you should be seeing a credit for taxes paid to Missouri.

Is the Missouri form a MO-NRI? (It will say in the upper left corner, I believe.)

Is there a way I can see that from inside the software? I haven’t printed the forms yet

If you have paid, you can print the forms and look.  Otherwise, no.  You can look at the list of forms in your return by doing this:

  1. In the left-side menu, select Tax Tools Tools.
  2. In the pop-up window Tool Center, choose Delete a form.

Don't delete a form, just look through the list and see which Missouri forms are there.

Am I paying Double state taxes?

Thank you Barb.  I do have a MO-NRI form with my MO file & it shows only my income being 100% from MO; 0% for husband. & I am getting credit for my MO taxes on line 11 of the CO form.  I guess I'm assuming that we would only pay taxes on my husbands income, not our total income minus MO taxes paid.  Looks like that may have been wishful thinking.

Thanks again for your assistance on my questions.  It's greatly appreciated.
