5 digit pin

I was finishing my tax return when TurboTax asked me to create a 5 digit pin number. Can anyone please tell me what this is? In previous years, I just mailed my taxes. This year, I am considering filing it electronically. Will I have a problem if this is the first time I create the pin? Will I have to do this every year I file it electronically?

Thank you for your help.

5 digit pin

Yes, you will have to do this every year you file electronically.  But, you will not have to remember your PIN or ever use it again.  It just serves as you electronic signature on your tax return.

However, if you choose a number that is easy for you to remember (or write down), you can use the same number year after year to verify your electronic signature.  If you do not remember the number you use, then you will need to enter the AGI from your previous year's return in order to electronically file the following year.

The 5 digit pin is an electronic filing pin that you create for your signature. Each year you can create a new pin, you don't have to remember the one that you used last year.

You don't need the 5-digit signature PIN from last year.   On a different screen you will be verifying your 2025 filing with your 2024 AGI.   Then on a subsequent screen where you electronically "sign" the return, it will ask for your birth date, today's date, and a 5-digit signing PIN.  It will say on that screen that you can use any 5 digits of your choice, except it cannot be all zeros.  While it can be the same 5 digits as last year (if someone wishes to use the same one), it doesn't have to be.  A filer could enter a new one every year if desired.
