2022 taxes dependent status question

Hi,

My child and I did taxes last year and she did not mark herself as a dependent when she filed so I was instructed to unmark her  as well.  This increased what I owed.  Could we amend both our forms and add dependent status and refile?  If so, what is the process

2022 taxes dependent status question

Thank you for your question!

This is a common issue among taxpayers and their dependents. You first want to ensure that your child is a qualifying dependent per the following link: https://turbotax.intuit.com/tax-tips/family/rules-for-claiming-a-dependent-on-your-tax-return/L8LODb...

If this is the case, your dependent will need to amend their tax return to show that they are a dependent on someone else's tax return.  After they have amended you can amend your tax return to claim your child as a dependent.  Amendment processing can take weeks or even months, which is why it's best to paper-file your and your child's tax return in the meantime.

For 2023 taxes, can I reclaim my child as a dependent as she is in college and living with me?

Yes. As long as she is a full-time student living abroad, your home is her tax home, as long as she is not self-dependent by paying more than 50% of her own support.

She can live away at college and still be claimed on your tax return as Other Dependent, over the age of 17, but under 24.

2022 taxes dependent status question

Hello Yvburley,

Depending on your child's age and any amount of earned income that she has made, you can claim your child as a dependent even if she is in college.

Your child must be under age 19 or, if a full-time student, under age 24. There's no age limit if your child is permanently and totally disabled.
If your child is working while they are in school, you must still be able to show that you are providing more than half their support.
The good news is that even if they live away from you for school, they are still considered to be living with you. That temporary absence generally does not count against you.

Thanks,
Sean
