Question about Schedule 1 line 8z

I'm using turbotax desktop version and I have income falls under schedule line 8z, other income. I entered the income and description in turbotax software, but the description only shows up in the sch 1 worksheet instead of the actual schedule 1 that is transmitting to IRS. Is it a bug for 2025 version? I did the same thing for 2024 and everything worked fine.

What type of income item are you referring to? There are many types of income that might end up on 8z on Schedule 1 (1040).

I ask because my test worked fine, but, of course, I don't know how you entered this income. Please describe where you entered this income in the TurboTax desktop interview.

Currently, I can have the correct amount and the correct tax. However, the description of the amount is not showing up in schedule 1

Here is my step:

Miscellaneous Income, 1099-A, 1099-C -> Other reportable income -> add -> enter the description (income from xxx) and the amount ($550).

The income shows up in the schedule 1 and the 1040 form. But there is no description for the entry (see screenshot)

The full description for "Other Income" Schedule 1 line 8z is reported on the "Other Income Statement" which is included with your 1040.

This is a change from previous years .

According to the IRS: (see page 92)

"List the type and amount of income. If necessary, include a statement showing the required information."

I have this exact same issue.

I just spent several hours on the phone with a turbotax agent.  The answer that came back from the tech experts was this "type" description appears on the "Other Income Statement" but not on the actual Line 8z of schedule 1.   However it will get transmitted to the IRS.

I have serious doubts this will get transmitted.  Just like other members if I print out my return for a mail-in tax returns, it does not show the "type" description on Line 8z.

So what are mail-in filers supposed to do?

I'm using the MAC version - is this also occurring on Windows or the on-line versions?

Has anyone actually e-filed yet with this issue?  I'm expecting the return to be rejected because of the missing information on line 8z.

Since this is a change from 2024 I believe this to be a bug.

Can we please get a TurboTax software expert to fully investigate this. - Thanks

Sorry, Long Explanation:  Desktop Mac user.  I too have spent a couple of hours, yesterday, regarding this issue.

I used the Less Common Income / Misc Income / Other Reportable Income (was for a UK Pension).  Entered the requested brief description & taxpayer amount.

As a 25+ year TT user, I've had this same deduction for many years, with no problems.

I previewed my return before submitting, and since on the Federal Form, Other Income looked ok, I submitted my returns.  Within an hour it was rejected by the IRS.  The code more or less indicated that there was no 'explanation' of what the 'other reportable income' was.

When I went back & checked: Schedule 1, Line 8z, the 'Other Income, List Type & Amount', I saw the figures had populated, but the 'List Type' had not.

The first person I spoke with (1/2 hour) didn't really understand, plus she was having issues with the screen share.  She then disconnected me.

Calling back, I was able to get a Level 1 tech who did know her stuff.  She spent another 45 minutes w/me, checked w/her supervisor and had me try other ways to get it to populate on Schedule 1.  No luck.  She then transferred me to a Level 2 Tech, who was extremely arrogant and told me to 'print it out, write it in & mail it'.  Really?  He then said it would be 'escalated' and I'd receive an email w/case #, etc.  I asked him for the case # & some type of ID that could reference who I spoke with.  Nope.

Anyways, here we are today and not sure where I'm going to go with this as it's obviously a bug in the software.

Same issue.  Definitely a bug.

The description also does not transfer to my state return causing a flag.

We just found the workaround or resolution to the issue. IN TT Desktop, you can go into FORMS mode... put your cursor on the description line for Line Z in Schedule 1... right click and select Override (CTRL+D) then you can type the name of the description there. It will populate on your 1040 as well, and you will be able to see it in your Print View.

Thank you for Choosing Turbo Tax!!

I had already tried that.  The Edit option is dithered out, so regardless if I put my cursor on the description line, right clicking option is dithered out & CTRL+D doesn't work.  Wish it were that easy.  Good try though.

Clearly this is a bug with the TurboTax software.

How do we elevate this to the correct level to get this fixed?

TurboTax expert employees, PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!

I need to file by mid-February.   Anyone considering switching to another program?  I've been using TurboTax for decades and really don't want to change.

Same problem for UK pension. IRS rejected my return. Have done the same thing for many years, first time experiencing this error.

Btw if you do override a value in forms, that voids your accuracy guarantee.
