If you were legally married on Dec. 31, 2018, you can't use Single filing status to file your tax return. It is common for someone filing MFS to owe more than filing single since there are many credits that can't be claimed on an MFS tax return that can be claimed on a single tax return.

If you're still married you'd probably do better to file Married Jointly, if the spouse agrees.
