Qualifying relative on Medicaid

I have an adult son who was unable to work at all in 2022 due to a health condition.  He meets all the criteria for a qualifying relative.  His employer let him go due to his inability to provide a return to work date so he had no choice but to enroll in Medicaid.  Does this have any bearing on whether or not I can claim him on my 2022 taxes?

Qualifying relative on Medicaid

Hello JuStan01, thanks for participating in our event today!

Good news, if someone otherwise qualifies as a dependent, then their medical insurance provider doesn't matter at all.  As long as your son earned less than $4300 for the year, and you provided more than half of his support, you are eligible to claim him as a dependent.

I do hope your son gets better soon!  But if for any reason your son ends up unable to work for a long period of time and begins to receive any disability benefits, remember that you will need to include that amount in your calculations of support.

Hope that helps!
