Student loans forgiven, particularly under qualified federal loan programs like the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program, are not taxable at the federal level. Some states do tax loan forgiveness, however, Vermont does not tax student loans that have been forgiven at the federal level. Eligibility is not affected by marriage - only by meeting the requirements of the forgiveness program.
