My wife and I were poll workers and earned a total of $670 combined. We both received 1099-+NEC forms. I use TurboTax Home & Business. During the initial review, TT asks if you received an NEC form. I replied yes. TT creates the NEC as a business, and I was forced to "open" a business, and then I got charged for self-employment taxes!!!
I have already filed and paid the "self-employment taxes". I started to do an amended return but TT didn't seem to pick up the taxes we had paid so I gave up. How do I file pollworker income in future using TT H&B? do I "lie" about receiving forms 1099-NEC and trying to put it under some other category? I want to pay the correct taxes and not overpay or create a business. We are both retired.

Thank you so much for your detailed answer. I have already e-filed and it's too much trouble to fix this for 2024 but I have copied your reply and will use it for future tax returns.
I am grateful for your quick and detailed reply.
