When you prepare your 2018 return, TurboTax will automatically calculate your 2019 estimated tax payments and prepare 1040-ES vouchers if the program thinks you may be at risk for an underpayment penalty next year. You may have not needed them but you can go back through to prepare your estimated taxes.

You can calculate your 2019 Federal estimated taxes and generate the payment vouchers by doing this:

  1. With your tax return open, search for 1040-es (be sure to include the dash) and select the “Jump to” link.
  2. Answer No to the question Do you want to change your W-4 withholdings for 2019?
  3. On the next screen, Review Your Estimates, select Review Now. Answer the questions about things like your 2019 filing status, income, and deductions.
  4. Eventually, you'll come to the Print Vouchers? screen. Answer Yes and we'll include your 2019 1040-ES payment vouchers when you print a copy of your return later.

Your 2019 Estimated State tax vouchers can be prepared through TurboTax. This is will be in the State section. As you go through your state, near the end, it will ask about estimated tax payments for the state.

We can tell you how to open your return back up to go through the estimated taxes interview and print out 2019 Form 1040-ES vouchers.

NOTE:  When you open your return back up, do not make any changes in the return itself if it's already been filed.   It's OK to go through the estimated taxes interview.

You can go through the section "W-4 and Estimated Taxes" to figure your customized 1040-ES quarterly tax payments for 2019.    There is also a place in that interview to enter what you have already paid for 2019 (if applicable), and it will let you include any expected income changes or any other changes you have for 2019.

  • Log in, and here's how to open your return back up:
  • Go to the section "Your Tax Returns & Documents".  Click on that line or the word SHOW to expand, then choose 2018.
  • Choose "Add a State."  (you don't really add one; that's just to get the return to open back up.)
  • Once the return is open, click in the left menu column on Federal.
  • Then at the top choose subtab "Other Tax Situations"
  • Scroll way down to the last category "Other Tax Forms"
  • Find topic "Form W-4 and Estimated Taxes" and click Start or Update.
  • If you need to adjust withholding, go through the W-4 interview.
  • If you don't need the W-4 (withholding) interview, you can skip that part and go to the 2019 estimated taxes interview.
  • You may get a screen that says "Review your Estimates for 2019?" and asks "Do you want to adjust/review your income or deductions".  Say YES (or Review Now), so you can get to the additional questions.
  • You will go through a lot of screens asking about expected income and deductions.
  • Finally, you will come to a screen that says "Enter Payments You Expect to Make."
  • There are some boxes there that say "Enter estimated tax payments you've already made for 2019."
  • Next screen will ask "which method" to use to calculate your 2019 estimated payments.
  • Next screen will ask if you want to print vouchers.

Also be aware that you have other payment options for quarterly estimated payments that involve no paperwork, checks, etc.   The Treasury has a site called EFTPS.gov  where many types of tax payments can be made, including quarterly estimated taxes or tax due from a Form 1040, etc.  You have to open an account and get a PIN (which they send in postal mail).   It's a free service.   https://www.eftps.gov/

Or if you don't want to open an account at EFTPS, you can use IRS Direct Pay at the irs.gov website, which allows you to make 1040-ES payments directly out of your bank account (free) and to print out a confirmation.

As for state estimated tax vouchers, first look in the Print Center (steps below) to see if they were already prepared, and if not, I'll also tell you below how to get them.

NOTE:  When you open your return back up, do not make any changes in the return itself if it's already been filed.

  • Open your return as in the comment above.
  • In the left menu column, click on TAX TOOLS, then PRINT CENTER.
  • Then choose "Print, save, view this year's return."
  • The next screen should offer 3 options:  "Just my tax returns", or "include government worksheets (optional)", or "include government and TurboTax worksheets (optional.)"
  • See if one of those PDFs has the vouchers you need.

If the state estimated tax vouchers are not there, see this FAQ below.   You can go to the end of the state interview to acquire them, but don't make any changes in the return itself if it's already been filed.
