Part year residency date for Virginia tax filing

Hello everyone,

I want to ensure I’m doing this correctly before submitting my forms.

I was a part-year resident of Minnesota and worked there from January 1 to June 30, 2024. On July 1, I started a new job in Virginia and moved there permanently. I took a 3-day vacation from June 28 to June 30, during which I came to Virginia and obtained a driver’s license with an issue date of June 28.

Now, as I’m filing my taxes, TurboTax is asking me when I became a resident of Virginia. I’m assuming that putting June 28 may complicate matters, as my job in Minnesota ended on June 30. This might require me to allocate some of my Minnesota income as nonresident income to Virginia. Would it be more appropriate to indicate July 1, since that’s when I officially started my new job and moved to Virginia permanently?

Part year residency date for Virginia tax filing

Yes, you can indicate July 1st as your official Virginia residency date.  For domicile (residency), you have to look at several factors, including intent.  By affirmatively declaring it even here, it shows your intent.
