The Form 1099-MISC indicates that you are not an employee, but an independent contractor. The person you work for does not consider you an employee and has not withheld any taxes as he would for an employee.
For this reason you are considered self employed and the self employment tax is required to be paid on any net profit.
If you have expenses you can choose a different TurboTax product to reduce your income and tax. Expenses could include the use of your personal vehicle to go to various job sites, tools or supplies that require you to perform your job that you pay for and are not reimbursed.
The type of income (ex., Form 1099-MISC with non-employee compensation (Box 7), is a business reported on Schedule C (available in TurboTax Self-Employed Online or TurboTax Deluxe for desktop).
