NYC vs NY State Residency Income Allocation Question

I have a question on filing my NY State tax return with regards to partial NYC residency. I lived in NYC for 8-months between January and August 2020. I then lived in upstate NY (Orange County) for the remaining 4-months of the year between September and December.

Under the "New York City and Yonkers Information" section of the state return portion, there's a page titled "Allocate New York State Adjustments" where it instructs you allocate the NY State adjustments based on the time I lived in NYC.

Should I prorate the total NY State Adjustment amount (for discussion, say $8,000) for 8-months (67%) as earned in NYC, and show the rest in upstate NY? My employer remained based in Manhattan/NYC the entire time. If allocating only a portion of the total NY State adjustment to NYC, my state return increases significantly. If I leave as the income earned 100% as a resident, it's much lower.

Thank you for any insight.

Thank you.

Yes. You would file a New York resident return with part-year NYC residency and enter the number of months you lived in NYC. Your total wages should be allocated for eight months as a NYC resident as you are only liable for NYC tax during the time frame you were a city resident.

NYC vs NY State Residency Income Allocation Question

I have a similar question about allocation of NY State Adjustments given that I only lived in NYC for 3 months in 2021 having moved from another state without state income tax.  The message says "Because your residence changed in 2021 you must allocate your New York State adjustments of -$20,500 based on the time you spent as a resident of New York City or Yonkers" (I am not a Yonkers resident).  Then below it provides 4 blank boxes for Descriptions.  I have no idea where Turbo came up with the amount I have to allocate. I thought it would be adjustments to income but checked on Schedule 1 and there is no corresponding amount.  Can you please advise where the amount to be allocated was generated so that I know what to enter into the Description boxes and the corresponding amount for each adjustment? I assume once I know that I can then do a calculation based on the 25% of the year I was in NYC.  Please confirm that as well.

NYC vs NY State Residency Income Allocation Question

Please clarify:

Did you change jobs after you moved to MYC from another state?

When you set up your personal information, your resident state is NY. You file a part-year NYS return.

On your NYS part-year return, on one screen, you will enter the date of last move (when you moved to NYC). Under that date, you need to choose:

On December 31, 2021:

  • Lived in NYS
  • Did not live in NYS but received income from NYS sources while a nonresident
  • Did not live in NYS and received NO income from NYS sources while a nonresident

You have to answer the questions based on your situation:

NYC vs NY State Residency Income Allocation Question

You can review the worksheets associated with many of the calculations in TurboTax.  Here is how to review the worksheets.

You can view your entire return or just your 1040 form before you e-file:

  1. Sign in to your TurboTax account.
  2. Open or continue your return.
  3. Select Tax Tools from the menu (if you don't see this, select the menu icon in the upper-left corner).
  4. With the Tax Tools menu open, you can then:
    • Preview your entire return: Select Print Center and then Print, save or preview this year's return and worksheets (you may be asked to register or pay first).
    • View only your 1040 form: Select Tools. Next, select View Tax Summary in the pop-up, then Preview my 1040 in the left menu.
