Nonemployee expense reimbursement

I was recently had to have my car repaired, and it was in the body shop well beyond my insurance rental coverage. My car manufacturer said they would reimburse me for the expense of my rental car not covered by my insurance company. The car manufacturer is requesting I fill out a W-9 to be reimbursed. Would this be considered taxable income?

Nonemployee expense reimbursement

Yes, since it is not, technically, an insurance payment (which are, usually, tax free).

But, it may depend on the reason they are doing that, e.g. is it considered covered under warranty.  The fact that they are asking for a W-9, almost certainly, means it's taxable.
