Need some help about filing please!

So I am a single mom, and i currently do not work. I do have a “income” of a little over $8,000 a year (NOT from welfare)... I’m in college as well. The last 2 years her dad has filed her on his taxes but he only has her 3 days out of every 14 days & he does not split what he gets for her with me. My question is... could i file her this year? Am i allowed to do that?? Or should i just tough it out til i graduate (next December) and can start my career?
