My state taxes says $0 when it shouldn't, why is that? I seen a couple hundred would be given but it doesn't show up on my home page

If you have completed your state tax return, you should look at the actual state income tax return to verify your numbers and see if you are getting a refund.

You can get to your tax return in TurboTax desktop as follows:

  1. Switch to Forms Mode, and then  (see screenshots below for additional guidance)
  2. Scroll through your forms in the left panel and
  3. Click on the form you want to preview (Select your State Tax Return)

You can get to your Tax Return in TurboTax Online as follows:

  1. Go to "Tax Tools" in your left panel,
  2. Select "Tools" and then
  3. With the Tax Tools menu open, you can then:
  4. Preview your entire return: Select Print Center and then
  5. Print, save or preview this year's return (you may be asked to register or pay first).

You should always review your final tax return and forms before filing them.  You should also save a PDF copy of your tax return.

Your state withholding may need to be adjusted if you wish to get a larger refund. Depending on what state you are in, you can file a new withholding form to increase your state tax withholding. ‌Here's a list of state Department of Revenues where you can find out how to increase your tax withholding for your state. You can click here for How do I contact my state Department of Revenue?

Some reasons for getting a lower refund than expected are:

  1. You had new sources of income.
  2. You worked in multiple jobs.
  3. Your withholding is not enough.
  4. You had less charitable contributions.
  5. You had fewer medical expenses.
  6. You changed filing status (I.e. changing from Married filing jointly to single will cause a jump in your taxes).
  7. You had less mortgage interest.
  8. You have fewer tax credits, such as Earned Income Credit,, Child Tax Credit, American Opportunity Tax Credit, Lifetime Learning Credit
