You are not required to file a federal tax return since your only income is from social security benefits. 

You are not required to file a New Jersey state return either. Social Security income is not taxable in that state. Please view the New Jersey link below for more information.

"Separate lives"  Does that mean that you lived apart?
Are you filing a Married Filing Separate Federal tax return?

If you lived together at any time during 2018 then you must file a Federal tax return since 100% of Social Security is taxable up to 85% of the SS income.  if Marred Filing Separately and you lived with your spouse anytime during the year.

IRS Pub 915 page 3 for the base amount before SS is taxed.
For MFS and lived with spouse it is zero.

Who must file IRS Pub 17 page 6.    Married Filing Separately must file if over $5.00 of income.  And MSG and lived with spouse any time must file if over $5.00 of Social Security income.
