My 20 yr old child lived on her own and has Medicaid on her own. As she went back to school she moved home to save money for 8 months. Can I claim her as a dependent?

I did provide over half her support for the year and she moved home, but she had her own insurance as she'd applied at the beginning of the year.

You can claim her as dependent even if she has her own insurance as long as she meets all requirements listed below:

Qualifying child:

  • They're related to you.
  • They aren't claimed as a dependent by someone else.
  • They're a US citizen, resident alien, national, or a Canadian or Mexican resident.
  • They aren’t filing a joint return with their spouse.
  • They're under the age of 19 (or 24 for full-time students).
  • There's no age limit for permanently and totally disabled children.
  • They lived with you for more than half the year (exceptions apply).
  • They didn't provide more than half of their own support for the year.
