Hi,
I moved to Canada from California (crossed the border on Jan 1, 2022, but paid the majority of moving expenses (loading, shipping, packing materials purchase, flights in 2021). I kept my U.S. job and worked remotely until mid 2022. Do I get to deduct any moving expenses? And if so, would it be for the 2021 or 2022 tax year? I am filing my 2021 taxes currently as I had applied for an extension.
thank you

California does allow a moving expense deduction, but only for military moves or moves "related to the start of work at a new principal place of work". Time and distance tests must also be met.

Sorry, moving expenses aren't deductible on a U.S. federal tax return unless you're active duty military moving due to military orders.
Thank you! I moved from California. Is it allowed on my state return given that I didn't change jobs until 5-6 months after moving?
