married filing seperately

Trying both jointly and seperately but dont understand the itemized deductions for filing seperately. Does each person only claim their own deductions?

married filing seperately

Yes. Since if one spouse itemizes, the other spouse loses the standard deduction, the only choice is to itemize. You can choose to split the amounts on Schedule A or only take what is actually yours. You can't both take the same deduction.

Ok perfect. I will try each of us taking our own deductions. We have to pay alot filing jointly as we are newly married so trying seperately to see if that makes a little differance.
