I worked and lived in Virginia part of 2021 and in North Carolina for the rest of the year. My wife lived with me in both states. Why is turbo tax saying I have to file seperately.

Revisit the personal Info section to verify that you indicated that you want to file married filing jointly.
Just checked and it has us filing jointly. This came up when I started on the state taxes.
It is telling me that I have to file separately because I lived in two states for part of the year. I think it want two state returns which is what I was planning, but it refers me here for detailed instructions which I can't find and it won't let me proceed with the state return. Anybody have an answer?
For Virginia, if you and your spouse filed a joint federal return, but only one of you is a Virginia resident, the resident must use Filing Status 3, Married, Filing a Separate Return. @2meagand
Thanks but we were both residents of VA for 2 months and North Carolina the remain 10 months. I started with the North Carolina taxes and it is letting me proceed. Maybe if I get those done it will let me continue with VA.
