IWhy would I transmit my form without knowing what I ow?

I have not been given a view of my 1040 filing but I'm being asked to transmit

You can print your return before you transmit.  See this, from Turbo Tax help:

"Smart move! Even though we're increasingly moving to a paperless world, it's still a great idea to print a "hard copy" of your tax return after you've filed it.

Select your version for complete instructions."

Use the "Preview My 1040" command to check it before you submit it.
