I earned $1,010 last year and paid $6.00 in state taxes. I'm due that $6.00 refund, but you are charging me $29.99 to file my state taxes. Why? Or, can I just file fed

Charges are for services, not results. Think of it this way- someone can make 4 million dollars and owe 1 million in taxes when they file. We still charge them.

That being said, you didn't make a lot of money and probably don't have a state filing requirement. What state do you live in? We can check to see if you need to file. If you don't, I wouldn't bother for $6 either.

It is not cost effective to pay $29 to return $5.
Many states offer free filing through their tax revenue website.
