Is the self-employed package necessary($119) for independent contracting? Do I automatically have to file with it and buy it? Or was it added on?

Do you have any expenses to report for your independent contracting?   If so, the Self-Employed Edition is the only edition that can handle a self-employed business (Schedule C) that has expenses.    Deluxe and Premier can handle a Schedule C if there are no expenses.  And if you have no expenses, which of those to use depends on what other types of income you have in your return.
