Question

IRS rejected my return

My son who is legally married but separated from his wife has lived with me for two years. I have supported him entirely and wanted to claim him as a dependent. His wife filed a "married filing separately" and the IRS rejected my return since his name and SS# were listed on her form.

Does this mean there is no way I can claim him as a dependent?

Does your son have any income at all? How much?

He received maybe $3000 total in cash for the year, but no W2's or 1099's.

No, it does not mean you cannot claim him as a dependent, however your tax return will need to be mailed because the IRS is going to continue to reject it simply because your son's social security number is already on another tax return.
