I am using TurboTax Premier Desktop on a MacBook.
I successfully imported two 1099-R forms from one retirement firm.
When I tried to import forms from Vanguard, I could see the details of the form being imported, but when the import finished there was no form in the "List of 1099-R" page.
I called Turbotax support and reached a live person in 5 minutes (Good job!).
After some long pauses the agent told me that there is a known issue in importing composite 1099-R forms and that I will have to enter the data myself.
I asked her if the data I had imported already was good, and she said I should check the Turbotax data carefully. She also said that this import problem applies to both desktop and online versions of Turbotax.
I asked her if there was a plan to fix this problem before tax season gets hot and she said no.
I asked her if there was a list of known bugs available to users and she said no.
This is pretty shabby software QA.

Although you might be able to view or print your information from the website, most banks, brokerages and other financial institutions do not have the data formatted for import into tax software before sometime in February. So if you are wanting to enter it sooner, you have to key it in by hand. Or….wait until it is available for import.
I have Desktop program on Windows. I just tried importing my Vanguard 1099R into a test return. It imported fine and shows up in the list. Did you get the 1099R form from Online or in the mail? You need to enter the account number and document number from it. Why is your 1099R a composite 1099R? I think that's only for 1099int 1099div and 1099B.
And I just imported my composite 1099 DIV from Vanguard fine too. Try closing Turbo Tax and launch it again. Maybe even reboot your Mac. There maybe some updates you need.
Thanks for responding to my post. It is useful information the Turbotax can import some Vanguard 1099 documents.
I have restarted my computer and tried again. Turbotax loaded a software update when I started it.
The problem is still there. Vanguard's 1099-R forms are available for download now, and my account number and document ID were accepted. I know this because I could bring up correct document details during the import process and, at the end of the import ,Turbo Tax displayed the an "Import Summary Page" which listed the imported documents. The problem is that after I said I was done importing documents, the documents I saw in the preview were not in the list of 1099 forms for my return.
I am still unhappy that Turbotax says that this is a known problem but says they have no plans to fix it.
