If the IRS says that I do not need a Verification code in box 9 0f form W-2. Why is my filing attempt being denied because I did not enter a code?

The purpose of putting a verification code on copies B & C of the Form W-2 is a program that is designed to help the Internal Revenue Service verify the authenticity of the Form W-2 data and to combat identity theft and refund fraud. The code is a 16 digit code that is shown on a limited number of Forms W-2.

If the verification code is included on your Form W-2, then you must enter it into TurboTax.  If the Form W-2 does not have a code, then you may need to delete the form and re-input the Form W-2 to override the error.

To delete the Form W-2 do this will in your return:

  • Type Form W-2 in Search
  • Click the Trash Icon next to the Form W-2 that you want to delete
  • Click Yes to confirm. The form will be deleted.

If you have more than one W-2 that you had inputted. Select the Add another W-2 to re-input the deleted form.

If you do not have any additional W-2s entered, then:

  • Type Form W-2 in Search
  • Click the Jump to form w-2 link or the Go to Form W-2 button
  • Begin re-entering the information and navigate through the prompts

Otherwise, you may have to confer with your employer to verify if they participate in the verification code program, and secure the code from them.
