ID.me account required now?

Last tax season, I was able to obtain my IP PIN with my old IRS user name and password. Today, when I tried to access my individual account, evidently an ID.me account is now required. Do I have this right? I don't like anything about the ID.me account--even though it "says" it will delete my biometric data if I request it to do so, why should I trust that?! It seems that the "creep" to biometric data requirements just took a leap! --yikes!
