You can prepare the paper forms by hand in order to do a 2015 return for free. As for your income, you need your W-2 to file correctly. So you either need to get it from the employer -- who might still be able to provide a copy -- or pay to get it from Social Security. "Second to last pay stub" will not be okay to use. It will not match what the employer sent to the IRS. You can also get a wage and income transcript from the IRS. It will show the amounts reported by the employer to the IRS. But it will not show anything for your state--so that's a bit of a problem if you need to file a state return.

When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s. Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS received the return.
