Do you have a TurboTax Online account?

We'll help you get started or pick up where you left off.

I was on three health insurance plans in 2024, but only two are showing up on my return even though I inputted them all in the state tax return section. What should I do?

For the first three months, I was on my parents’ plan, then I was covered from one job for the next 6 months and another job for the last 3 months of the year. When entering my info, everything was accepted, though when I reviewed the return document before signing and filing only the latter two insurances showed up. I am not sure why, and calling the TurboTax assistance line didn’t help much (their suggestion was to file anyway and see what happens). Any suggestions?

If your state requires you to have coverage for the entire year, depending on your state, it may affect your taxes by imposing a penalty

As of 2023, there is no federal law that requires health insurance coverage. However, some states have enacted their own individual health insurance mandates, which require residents to maintain health insurance or face penalties.

These states include:

California, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Rhode Island, and Vermont. The District of Columbia also requires health insurance coverage.

Vermont does not impose a penalty.  The District of Columbia also does not impose a penalty.

It's important to note that the specific requirements and penalties of these mandates are different per state. For example, in California, the penalty is based on income, while in Massachusetts, it's a flat fee.

If you have already filed your state return you could try contacting your State Department of Revenue and see if there is anything that can be done about it.
