I was helping my son file his return and after submitting it, the IRS rejected it because someone already claimed a dependent with his SS#.

After reviewing his return we realized that I typed in his twin brother's SS# which is one number different and his brother was claimed as a dependant. What is the best way to correct the SS# on his return in turbo tax and can it be resubmitted electronically or do we have to file by mail?  Thank you.

Sign on to his online account and go to the My Info section to edit his personal information and correct the SSN.

Once the SSN has been corrected you can go to the File section and e-file the tax return again.

You have until October 20, 2024 to correct and e-file a 2023 rejected tax return.
