I've been paying alimony since 2012. My divorce was finalized in December of 2023. Can I still claim the alimony I paid for 2023 on this tax return?

I was ordered by the court to pay alimony beginning in 2012. I've paid the alimony until December of 2023, when my divorce was finalized. Can I deduct the alimony I paid in 2023 from my tax return?

Yes, the alimony you paid to your former spouse in 2023 can be deducted as long as you had a separation agreement before December 31, 2018.  To enter your alimony payments:

  1. Sign in to the TurboTax
  2. Open or continue your return.
  3. Search for alimony paid.
  4. Select the Jump to link in the search results.
  5. Answer Yes on the Did you pay alimony to a former spouse in 2023? screen

@LeticiaF1   But he said the divorce wasn't finalized until Dec 2023.
