I uploaded my 1099-B crypto PDF to TurboTax, but when I view my return it says "Taxpayer must mail in statement with more details". Why does it say that if I uploaded the 1099B statement to TurboTax?

I don't want to e-file and then mail in the 1099-B. TT says it will attach the 1099B PDF to the tax return, but then it says "Yes" to "Taxpayer must mail statement...". This is conflicting information.

Yes, you do need to mail your supporting statements, such as your brokerage statements (Form 1099B) with Form 8453, but you don't need to include Form 8949 since TurboTax filed this form electronically with your tax return. You can include it for reference purposes, if you like.

When you use the summary method, TurboTax produces a Form 8949 with the summary totals that you entered, not the individual transactions, so Form 8949 that is included in your e-filed return is NOT sufficient for this purpose. This is why you are required to mail in Forms 1099-B.

It's always a good option to send documents to the IRS by a method that provides tracking information.

Note that you must postmark this mailing no later than three days after your e-filed return is accepted by the IRS.

Any Forms 1099-B that you uploaded to TurboTax are not sent to the IRS with your e-filed return. This step saves your forms with your online tax return for your future reference.

Thank you for the thorough answer. Why then does TT specifically state, "upload your 1099-B and we will remit it to the IRS for you". Why would it say that if they do not? I filed and my return was accepted and there has been no indication anywhere for me to mail in my 1099-B, even though I only input the totals into TT. Again, this is for 1099-B Crypto only.

Please clarify if you entered summary info or individual sale transactions.

@JG1989  If you uploaded your 1099-B into TurboTax then you do not need to mail your 1099-B to the IRS.  That is almost certainly a lingering bug that someone will remove after the 10,000 other things on their list are done.
