I see a 39.99 charge for option to pay with your refund. I didn't see this listed anywhere else, are you charging to collect payment via refund?

If you chose to pay the TurboTax product fees out of the Federal refund, there is an additional 39.99 service fee for that option (44.99 for California filers.)

You will save money if you pay  upfront by credit/debit card or a prepaid debit card you can buy in a store for a few bucks.

If you already chose that payment option and want to remove it, here's how to remove it and pay upfront, depending on your location:

Most states:

California filers (where that refund processing option is part of "Premium Services.")

You should say "additional" fee when providing that option so it's not so misleading.

I did in my answer above.   But I'm a fellow user--not a TurboTax employee.    It's TurboTax that makes it confusing in their software.  We have complained about it for a long time.  And by the time people get there, they are anxious to file and tend to go through that section too fast, don't read the banking agreement they have to accept, etc.  I try to discourage people from using that option whenever they post in the forum asking about fees before paying.

I had no option but to use the premium and it charged me for the state after i had done it all myself on the free version. That's complete bullshit

hk01075:
There are no state return fees in Free Edition, so something in your return may have required you to upgrade for some reason.  All of the online paid editions have a fee for a state return.

You're posting in an old answered thread from last year, and I'm not sure what all you are talking about since you only wrote one short sentence.   But in your terminology make sure you are not confusing Premium Services and Premier Edition.  People commonly confuse those 2.   You specifically said "premium" above, so I'll assume that is literally what you mean, and here's some more info on why you may see a fee for Premium Services.  Or did you mean Premier Edition and typed the wrong term in your comment?

In any case, if you are a California filer and chose to pay fees out of the Federal refund, it does require Premium Services at 44.99.  As I mentioned in my answer above, that can be removed prior to filing and once Premium Service is removed, then one can pay the TurboTax fees upfront with credit/debit card.

If you purchased Premium Services, here are your other benefits that come with Premium Services, including Audit Defense and ID protection:

Absolutely. Because of this happening to me just a moment ago, I will be using a different service next year. My fiance and other family members will as well. Way to go TurboTax.

That also happened to me. No choice what edition to use. Forced to pay premium price, then charged an unspoken fee to have it taken from my refund. Would have cost the same and been easier on me to have someone else do my taxes this year. No more TurboTax for me
