I replaced my Heat Pump, Roof and windows in the 2024 tax year. when I filled out the tax credit for these items, it said I have 0.00 deductions. why?

Turbo Tax said it was a tax credit for these items. But didn't give me any credits at all!

If you have not completed the rest of your return, this may be why the credit is not appearing. The energy credit is non-refundable, so if you don't have enough income tax being computed, the credit won't be generated and will instead be carried forward. The heat pump (maximum $2,000 credit) and windows (maximum $600 credit) are entered in separate places.  There is no credit for a roof.

Here is how to claim the credit in TurboTax Online:

1.Upon opening TurboTax, choose Deductions & Credits

2. Locate Your Home

3. Start/Revisit Home Energy Credits

4. On the Energy Efficient Home Improvements screen, select Yes then Continue.

5. Answer the next few questions until you get to "Did you have any of these qualified  residential energy property costs in 2024?" Windows are listed here.  Select Yes and continue.

6. Make sure you enter the total cost and answer the questions about ownership and location of the home.

7. Next you will be asked "Did you have any of these residential energy property costs in 2024?" Heat Pumps are listed here.

8. Answer the questions and enter the cost

Make sure you carefully answer the questions- the property must be in the US, you need to be the original user of the improvements, the improvements cannot be for a new construction home, and you must reasonably expect to use them for at least 5 year.
