Do you have a TurboTax Online account?

We'll help you get started or pick up where you left off.

I received an email stating that someone attempted to file a return using my personal info, but there is nothing on my turbotax account. How can I confirm its real?

When I logged into my turbotax account, there are no banners, warnings, messages, or anything in my recent activity showing that someone logged into my account, which the account itself may not be compromised, but I'm worried someone used my information on a separate account to file a return.

Who was the email from?  Check carefully to be sure it is not a fishing email, a fake email attempting to get private information from you.  The good news is that this was a failed attempt, but you should establish an identity PIN with the IRS right away by going to Get An Identity Protection PIN | Internal Revenue Service (irs.gov).  You then enter this PIN number into TurboTax under Federal Taxes, Other Tax Situations, Other Return Info, Identity protection PIN.   By doing this, someone else will not be able to successfully file a tax return in your name without your identity PIN, even if they do have your SSN.  Also, in all future years, you must continue to supply the IRS generated identity PIN number. The PIN you received for this year's tax filing is good for only this calendar year.  After that, the IRS will automatically generate a new PIN for you, which you can access by going to the same website, Get An Identity Protection PIN | Internal Revenue Service (irs.gov).  Finally, to get your PIN, you will need to set up a login and password with ID.ME.   That will be explained when you get your identity PIN.
