If you made a payment when you filed the extension, just
make sure TurboTax ultimately gives you credit for the
payment. It may populate the payment automatically for
you. If it doesn't, you can enter it (or check on it) as below:
To add,
change or delete a payment made with an extension request -
· Click on Federal Taxes (Personal using Home and Business)
· Click on Deductions and Credits
· Click on I'll choose what I work on
· Scroll down to Estimates and Other Taxes Paid
· On Other Taxes Paid, click the start or update button
On the next screen, scroll down to Payments with Extension
Once you have entered (or confirmed if pre populated)
the extension payment, then before filing verify that you are getting credit
for it. Look at Line 70 of your Form 1040 and verify that the Federal
figure is correct. A state extension payment is entered in the same
navigation steps as above.
To get the amount paid on a state extension to show up on
the state return……
When you are done updating your federal
return, you need to transfer the new federal information by going back through
the state tab and the state return. Nothing will change until you transfer the
fed info to the state again. If applicable, verify that it appears on the state
return.
I followed the instructions by Click on Personal -> Deductions & Credits -> Estimate and Other Taxes Paid -> Click on Update on Other Income Taxes -> Update Payment with 2023 federal extension. It shows the exact amount I paid when I filed my extension. But I still don't get credit. When I was ready to e-file, it still asked for the payment options.
@hungtdao Didn't it show up on schedule 3 line 10 and go to 1040 line 31? Maybe it wasn't enough and you still owe more.
Schedule 3 line#10 and 1040 line#31 show blank. The amount that I owe is exact the amount I have paid in my extension. The amount is not changed since my income remains the same. The only update is for my real estate investment which has no income yet.
Try entering it again. Look around and see if it showed up on another line.
You can type estimates paid in the search box at the top of your return and click Find and it will give you a link to Jump To the screen where you enter Extension Payments.
To enter the amount you paid with an extension (including state extension) go to
Federal Taxes (or Personal for desktop H&B version)
Deductions and Credits
Then scroll way down to Estimates and Other Taxes Paid
Other Income Taxes - Click the Start or Update button
Next page second section Payments with Extension
Either Visit All or Click Start or Update by the extension you paid
