No, you cannot e-file 2022.    E-filing is permanently closed for all past year returns and has not yet opened for 2024 returns.  Your 2022 return can only be filed by mail.  Print, sign and date it in ink, and mail it.

When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s.  Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.

Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses.  Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.

    No not with Turbo Tax.

Sorry it's too, late to start a 2022 or prior online return or use the mobile app, either on Turbo Tax or the IRS.  And too late to efile 2022.

If you need to start 2022 or prior you can buy the Desktop download here,

TurboTax® 2022 Prior Year Tax Prep - File Past Years' Taxes

You will need a full Windows or Mac to install it on.

If you have a simple return and want to file for free you can fill out the forms by hand.  Here are some basic forms.....

Here is the 2022 1040 return

or if you want bigger type use 1040SR for Seniors,

Don’t forget your state.  And you will have to print and mail your returns.  So be sure to attach copies of your W2s and any 1099s that have withholding on them.  You have to mail federal and state in separate envelopes because they go to different places.  Get a tracking number from the post office when you mail them for proof of filing.

And....just in case you have fallen behind and have not yet prepared or filed 2023----

You cannot change the tax year.   The current online program is for 2024 only.   Only a 2024 return can be prepared online and only a 2024 return can be e-filed.

Online preparation and e-filing for 2021, 2022, and  2023 is permanently closed.

Note:  The desktop software you need to prepare the prior year return must be installed/downloaded to a full PC or Mac.  It cannot be used on a mobile device.

To file a return for a prior tax year

If you need to prepare a return for 2021, 2022, or 2023  you can purchase and download desktop software to do it, then print, sign,  and mail the return(s)

You may also want to explore purchasing the software from various retailers such as Amazon, Costco, Best Buy, Walmart, Sam’s, etc.

Remember to prepare your state return as well—if you live in a state that has a state income tax.

I'm in the sam boat as you. I purchased the 2022 tax software from Turbotax and spent hours entering my information only to find that they aren't allowing e-filing. After doing some digging I found that the state regarding filing being permanently closed isn't universal it only applies to Turbotax. I would recommend that you go to FREETAXUSA to e-file. Here is what I found and was able to e-file.

How do I e-file a prior year return?

The IRS allows 2022 federal tax returns to be e-filed until early November 2025.
To e-file a prior year tax return the IRS requires an Identity Protection PIN.
The IRS shuts down e-filing for maintenance each year from late November to early January.
Prior year returns for years before 2022 must be mailed.

    Hope this helped
