I marked myself as someone being able to claim me as a dependent. However, no one actually claimed me as dependent. Will the IRS recognize me as a dependent or an independent?

It is not a matter of they didn't claim but were they qualified to claim you. If someone can actually claim you, then you are a dependent, even if they don't claim you. The IRS will go by your return, which shows you are a dependent.
