I'm trying to file for federal extension. At the end of the process, TT online button says "Transmit My Returns". Why? This is an extension. I'm hesitant to click.

If you did not prepare a complete return, then it means your extension is going to be transmitted.

Not sure why that is stating transmit returns, the following FAQ might help you.

How do I file an IRS extension (Form 4868) in TurboTax Online?

I don't know but maybe file an extension outside of your account by using TurboTax Easy Extension.

That is my hesitation.

My return is 90% done.

I want TT to just file for an extension.

The top of the page I worked up to says "Turbotax extension consent agreement"  but the button says "Transmit my return now".  So the page seems inconsistent.

The button should say "Transmit my extension now"
If I click it, I'm not sure what it would do.

You do have the option to use Easy Extension (a separate TurboTax website) rather than filing from within your TurboTax product.

However, you can file the extension within your return following the procedures below and it won't transmit your tax returns with it:

To file Form 4868 to request an extension on time to file your tax return, select your situation:

Keep in mind: An extension doesn't give you extra time to pay your taxes, but it'll keep you from getting a late filing penalty. (You'll still owe interest if you pay after the deadline.)

We have confirmed that filing the extension in TurboTax does not transmit your tax return. You have to do that from the File section.

You do also have the option to use Easy Extension (a separate TurboTax website) rather than filing from within your TurboTax product. Or, visit the IRS website for other options to file an extension.

We did report to our TurboTax developers that there was concern among users about the language in the Extension section, and they have scheduled the form to be updated before next filing season.
