I'm filing today (October 15) but TurboTax says I have to mail in the form. I owe zero and will receive zero. Will I have a penalty?

I finished my form today and TurboTax provided a notification saying I have to mail in the forms because I have zero in my 1040. I will receive zero and owe zero. Will I receive a penalty fee for mailing with a postmark tomorrow?

If you do not owe tax due there is no penalty for filing past the deadline.    But October 15 is the last day to e-file, so if you cannot e-file, your return must be filed by mail.

When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s.  Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.

Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses.  Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.
