I'm confused as to why I'm being charged an additional $35 to pay with my return

The additional charge is only if you opt to pay with your refund since it requires using a third party to process your refund.  You can pay with a credit or debit card to avoid this charge.

Note: Direct deposit to a bank account does not have an additional charge.
