the IRS closed e-filing of extensions even for those living in Texas on 5/17/2021. get it in the mail as soon as possible. you'll want documentation that it was mailed timely (it'll likely be months before the IRS opens it) and also proof of delivery.
An extension request is only for filing the tax return. Any taxes owed are due and payable on June 15, 2021 for residents of Texas and Oklahoma affected by the ice storm. If not paid by 06/15/2021 there will be a failure to pay penalty assessed by the IRS.
The extension request can only be printed and mailed on or before June 15, 2021, it cannot be e-filed.

To request an extension to file your federal taxes after May 17, 2021, print and mail Form 4868, Application for Automatic Extension of Time To File U.S. Individual Income Tax Return. We can’t process extension requests filed electronically after May 17, 2021.

Requests for extensions can’t be e-filed after the main tax filing deadline, which is usually April 15 but this year was May 17.
If you are in a situation where the main deadline has past but yours has not, due to special circumstances, you have to mail your request on paper using form 4862, which will extend your filing deadline to October 15.
