I just finished e-filing my federal and state return. When I went back to view it the wages amount line1 doesn't match my w-2 and it says sch1654 which is the difference

My refund amount is less than I expected and I'm not sure how to amend the return when I entered the w-2 amount correctly. I don't know why line 1 is inflated by this difference.

It won't always match because the etc. in the line description (Wages, salaries, tips, etc.) refers to over a dozen items that might not be on your W-2, including unreported disability or sick pay, scholarship or fellowship income, taxable tips, dependent care or adoption benefits, and excess moving reimbursements just to name a few.

The Sch1654 means you have scholarship income added to your W-2 income. Scholarship money is taxable if used for these education expenses:

  • Room and board
  • Travel
  • Any other expense not required for enrollment
