If you are a US citizen you cannot file a dual status return. If you are married, you can either file married filing jointly or married filing separately. I'm not sure where you find that you need to file dual-status.

I wish to change my filing status from filing jointly to filing separate. My wife lives in the Philippines and is a us citizen. Can I change my filing statue
