I'm sharing with you a TurboTax FAQ below that may help you out. You'll see the format with which the control number must be entered. Maybe that will help? The FAQ also says that the use of the control number by payroll is optional. If you can't "fix" the issue by using this information, I'd probably just leave it blank or use the suggestion of just using random numbers in a certain order. You'll see this in the FAQ.

If you are having trouble with the control number I would first try leaving the box blank.
The IRS is not concerned with the control number, it is a number large payroll companies use to identify W2s.
If you get errors with the blank box, just enter any number in this format: 5 digits, space, 5 digits (for example, 12345 67890).
