Leave the control number blank if it is blank. It is not a necessary field. If you do type in a number, you might not be able to use hyphens or spaces, both of which you show in your question....
The reason not to put in or not put in a number is to be sure the IRS can correctly match your copy of the form to the one they receive from the company that sent you the form.
You don't have to type in 12345-67890. Not all W-2s (or employers) will necessarily include or support a Box D Control number. Your alternative to importing a W-2 document is to simply input the same information manually.
The actual Control Number itself is not necessary in completing your tax return. If you choose to type in your W-2 manually, rather than importing it electronically, then you should not have to enter anything from Box D at all, if you do not want to. In fact, you can simply leave the field blank.
Please visit Box D on W-2 for more information.
